Facebook Adds Google Photos Transfer Tool

Facebook Google Photos Tool

Facebook is planning to put out a tool today allowing users to transfer their photos into Google Photos. Initially, users in Ireland will get the new tool first, followed by a worldwide release early in 2020.

According to Steve Satterfield, director of public policy “For almost a decade, we’ve enabled people to download their information from Facebook. The photo transfer tool we’re starting to roll out today is based on code developed through our participation in the open-source Data Transfer Project.”

The Data Transfer Project has many of the big tech firms involved including Twitter, Google, Apple & Microsoft along with other big names. The Google Photos tool is Facebook’s initial interconnectivity project, but they may be adding other services in the future.

After the release in Ireland they will use the data collected to improve the tool before the worldwide release of the project.

Google users will likely find the tool useful if they don’t already backup their pictures to Google Photos on their phone. If you already have automatic backups enabled the new feature may not needed.
