What is the most popular content on YouTube?

According to a new Pew Research study children’s videos are among the most popular based videos posted by the biggest channels for the first week of 2019.

Pew analyzed 43,770 of the most subscribed YouTube channels and found that they posted 48,486 hours of content in the first week of 2019. Additionally, the average video was 12 minutes in length with an average viewership of 58,358 and a total viewership of 14.2 billion. Also worth noting is that 56% of these channels posted 1 video during that week, with just 10% producing over 70% of the videos and gaining 79% of all the views.

With that information one might determine that 12 minute videos are the sweet spot for getting your videos higher ranked in YouTube… or it could just mean the top subscribed channels just want that extra ad spot. I’ll leave that up to you to decide, but we know YouTube popularity is heavily influenced by strictly adhering to what the algorithm favors. We also see that the majority of channels posted at least one video per week, which jives with the assumption that consistency is highly important.

Unrelated to children’s videos, video game related content was also among the most popular genres on YouTube. 18% of the videos posted by the top 44k accounts were on this topic, with average video length being much longer than the 12 minutes for children’s content.

Lastly, Pew analyzed the most popular keywords among the the highest subscribed channels. No real surprise, fortnight, prank, worst, president & Trump were among the most popular.
